The Calico hills are literally swiss cheese in regards to mine shafts. There are a couple of deaths a year out there from people falling into shafts, although most of these are actually at Calico Ghost Town (dumb tourists that ignore the warning signs). This is not wide open desert with mounds poking up out of relatively flat terrain.
